Kootenai County excess proceeds and uncashed county checks
Kootenai County, Idaho holds two kinds of money for people: excess proceeds from tax deed sales, and uncashed county checks (refunds, payments and other checks that were never cashed). Both lists are published on the County's website.
How to claim Kootenai County surplus funds yourself (free)
- Search the County's uncashed check list or surplus list for your name and note the check or parcel number.
- Follow the claim instructions on the County's unclaimed property page, or call the Kootenai County Treasurer using the number on kcgov.us.
- Send the County's claim form with a copy of your ID and proof of your current address.
- If the money has already moved to the State, search yourmoney.idaho.gov and claim there, free.
Deadline
In Idaho the county treasurer holds excess proceeds for a short window after its notice (60 days under Idaho Code 31-808). After that the money goes to the Idaho State Treasurer's unclaimed property program, where you can still claim it free. Uncashed county checks are typically sent to the State Treasurer after the County's holding period.
Good to know
Idaho Code 14-5-1301 voids paid finder agreements for money held by the State until 24 months after it reaches the State. In that period we will only point you to the free claim.
